Repair or Replacement – How Can You Tell?
One of the biggest concerns homeowners have is determining if they really need to replace their system or if they just need repair service. The most telltale sign of needing a water heater replacement is a leak. If the leak originates from the tank itself then it needs to be replaced. Here are a few other symptoms to look for:
No Hot Water: This is usually the number one indication that something is wrong with your water heater. Even if your water is warm, but does not come out hot, this means that your water heater most likely needs repairs.
Leaks – Is there water pooling around the base of your water heater? This is an indication your water heater might be leaking. If your gas water heater is leaking make sure the pilot light on your tank is lit, and the water didn’t put the flame out, and there is no gas leaking in your home. If you notice water pooling around your water heater, contact R&R Plumbing to come out and provide an inspection right away.
Noises: Crack and pop sounds are usually an indication that there is a break in between the heating elements in the water heater.
The Color of Water: Is your water coming out of your faucets brown or has an unpleasant smell? If your water is rusty, that means that your water heater needs to be replaced. If there is a bad smell, then your water is breaking down. Sand in your water or mud in your water is an indication that there is a build-up at the bottom of your tank as well.
Age: How old is your water heater? Water heaters can last about 10-12 years.
Hot Water Heater Sales & Installation
The upfront cost of changing a hot water heater can be regained by the energy savings it provides over time. To save money, you’ll need a system that not only provides enough hot water but also does so efficiently. The proper hot water heater and its fuel source are important choices to consider. Choices include conventional or tankless systems, powered by electric, gas, and propane. We recommend both Navien & AO Smith Hot Water Heater Systems.
Conventional Hot Water Heaters
These systems are the most common. They keep a reservoir tank of hot water at the ready. It can be powered by natural gas or electricity. It has a less expensive upfront cost and systems last between 10 to 15 years. However, keeping the water hot does cause a loss of standby energy. You can help reduce this loss by purchasing an insulated tank.
Tankless/ On-Demand Hot Water Heaters
These systems provide instant hot water on demand and are powered by gas or electricity. They are expected to last 20 or more years and do require some maintenance over time. These types of systems are 90% more efficient than conventional hot water heaters. Simultaneous uses can stretch the hot water supply. You can fix this by installing more than one unit.
